What is the metal wire drawing process?
Mar 10, 2020

The metal wire drawing process is a metal processing process in which metal is forcibly passed through a mold by using an external force, so that the cross-sectional area of the metal is compressed to obtain the required cross-sectional area shape and size. It has been widely used in the cable industry at present. The LHD-450 / 13-2 high-speed copper wire drawing machine introduced in the article " About LHD-450 / 13-2 Double-head Copper Pull Machine" uses a metal wire drawing process to draw Φ8mm pure copper rod into Φ1.3mm~Φ3.5mm wire. Similarly, another product of our company, the LHD-450/13 high-speed al. alloy rod breakdown machine, also uses a metal wire drawing process to draw Φ9.5(Φ12)mm ordinary al.& alloy rod into Φ2.3 –Φ4.5mm single wire.

In the metal wire drawing process, a mold that changes the shape and size of a metal is called a wire drawing die. Wire drawing die usually refers to various die for drawing metal wire. The center of all drawing dies has a certain shape of hole, round, square, octagonal or other special shapes. When the metal is pulled through the die hole, the size becomes smaller and even the shape changes. The wire drawing die can be divided into multiple types, and the following types of wire drawing die are popularized:

1. Steel mold: The steel mold is sufficient when drawing soft metal (such as gold and silver). The steel mold can have multiple holes with different apertures.

2. Tungsten carbide nib: Tungsten carbide nibs are generally used when drawing steel wires (steel wires). The typical structure of this mold is a cylindrical (or slightly tapered) carbide die core closely embedded in a case, the inner hole of the mold core has a bell radius, an entrance angel, an approach angle, a bearing and a back relief.

3. Steel wire mold: For drawing non-ferrous metal wires, such as copper and aluminum, wire drawing dies similar to steel wire dies are also used, with some differences in the shape of inner holes.

4. Polycrystalline mold: Polycrystalline mold (man-made diamonds) can be used for drawing thin wires, as well as wire-drawing molds using natural diamonds.
